Drilling Rig Mats are almost always wood and steel mats or steel frame mats. These cushions are usually made of spruce, pine, fir, or a combination of these and encased in a steel frame. The frame is usually I-beam or H-beam. Steel is used to strengthen the mats, allowing mat manufacturers to create larger sized mats and capable of supporting more weight than all other types of mats. Common sizes are 8'x10', 8' x 20', 8' x 30' and 8' x 40'. Sizes are also flexible and can be custom designed. A great advantage is the easy-to-restore wooden inserts that give new life to an already long-lasting cushion
